“Banking risks and the application of Basel II rules” conference held in Tunisia

Zurich, March 22, 2007 -- the Bank Association of Maghreb (Union des Banques Maghrébines) organized last March 15-16 a conference of the topic “The banking risks and the Basel II rules” in partnership with IRIS integrated risk management, represented by its chairman, Dr. Jürg B. Winter. This event was attended by over 100 senior executives from banks and central banks from the region of Maghreb. Regulators, bankers, sponsors, experts discussed about credit risk, the rating, made experience with the implementation of Basel II in Europe, etc.

According to the speakers and the audience, Basel II compliance was generally viewed as an opportunity to modernize the banking system of the region but this move has to be done at its own pace. Basel II requires changes in the banks but also the framework in which they operate.
